Biography

John F. Stowell, also known as John Stowell, was born on July 30, 1950, in New York, and is an American jazz guitarist, composer, author, and lecturer. Raised in Connecticut, he studied under Linc Chamberland and John Mehegan. In the mid-1970s, he met bassist David Friesen in New York City, leading to a collaborative duo that recorded and toured extensively from 1976 to 1983. His debut album Golden Delicious was released in 1977. Throughout his career, he has released numerous albums, including Picture in Black and White (1997) with Uwe Kropinski and Elle (2000). He has also collaborated with notable artists such as Dave Liebman and Frank Haunschild. His contributions to jazz education are significant, and he has been an artist-in-residence at various schools internationally and has authored the book Jazz Guitar Mastery. Further releases include Rain Painting (2021) and 9 Treasures (2023) with Kit Garoutte.
