John Roberts & Tony Barrand, a folk music duo, formed in 1969 while both were graduate students in psychology at Cornell University. Their repertoire primarily consisted of traditional English music, including sea shanties, and they released their debut album Spencer the Rover is Alive and Well and Living in Ithaca in 1971. Throughout their career, John Roberts & Tony Barrand released several notable albums such as Across the Western Ocean: Songs from the Era of the North Atlantic Sailing Packets (1973), Mellow With Ale from the Horn (1975), and Dark Ships in the Forest: Ballads of the Supernatural (1977). They also performed as members of the four-man act Nowell Sing We Clear. Tony Barrand passed away on January 29, 2022, at the age of 76, while John Roberts died on February 3, 2025, at the age of 80.
