Biography

Joel Weiskopf, born in 1962 in Syracuse, New York, is an American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader. He grew up in a suburb of New York City and began his professional career in the mid-1980s with Woody Herman's big band, contributing to their 1987 album Woody's Gold Star. Weiskopf's breakthrough came when he started leading his own bands in the mid-1990s, featuring musicians such as Brian Blade and John Patitucci. His debut album, The Search, was released in 1999 under the Criss Cross label. Subsequent albums include New Beginning (2001), which features the track "Tuesday Night Prayer Meeting," a tribute to Charles Mingus, and Change In My Life (2002). Weiskopf has also collaborated with various artists including Craig Brann, Ed Byron, and Joe Magnarelli. His 2007 album, Devoted To You, marked another significant release in his discography.
