Biography

Cellist with the Juilliard String Quartet from 1974 to 2016, Joel Krosnick was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on April 3, 1941. He grew up in a family of amateur musicians, playing in trios with his parents and later with his older brother, violinist Aaron Krosnick. Introduced to contemporary music at Columbia College, he taught at the University of Iowa, the University of Massachusetts and then at the Juilliard School in New York, where he was recruited by the quartet of the same name before heading the cello department in 1994. He trained many students who went on to become virtuosos, including Zuil Bailey and Alisa Weilerstein. In addition to his work as a teacher and member of the Juilliard String Quartet, Joel Krosnick has recorded several albums of chamber music, particularly modern and contemporary works, with pianist Gilbert Kalish as his regular partner. His repertoire has included scores by Beethoven, Debussy, Prokofiev, Poulenc, Carter, Hindemith, Janáček, Cowell, Sessions, Bacon, Overton and Shapey. His recordings include The Virtuoso Cello (1965), Beethoven: Cello Sonatas & Variations (1995), Sonatas by Poulenc, Prokofiev & Carter (1996), In the Shadow of World War I (1997) and In the Shadow of the World War II (1999).
