James Joseph Paulsen, known professionally as Joe Sun, was an American country music singer-songwriter born on September 25, 1943, in Rochester, Minnesota. Before his music career, he spent time in college and the Air Force, working various jobs including as a DJ at Radio WMAD in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1972, Sun moved to Nashville, Tennessee, aiming to establish himself as a musician within five years. He initially ran a small graphics business called The Sun Shop before transitioning into independent record promotions.
Sun's breakthrough came with his debut single "Old Flames (Can't Hold A Candle To You)" released in May 1978 on Ovation Records, which reached number 14 on the Hot Country Songs charts. Further hits followed, including "High And Dry" and "On Business For The King". By 1980, Sun had charted fourteen singles. After Ovation closed down, he signed with Elektra Records in 1981, releasing notable albums such as Livin' On Honky Tonk Time and The Best Of Joe Sun. His album Hank Bogart Still Lives, released in 1989, was outsold in France only by Randy Travis. Throughout his career, Sun recorded fifteen albums and performed extensively in the United States and Europe. He also acted in the film Marie alongside Sissy Spacek, Jeff Daniels, and Morgan Freeman. Joe Sun passed away on October 25, 2019, in Palm Bay, Florida.
