Biography

Jim Pepper, born Jim Gilbert Pepper II on June 18, 1941, in Salem, Oregon, was an American jazz saxophonist, composer and singer of Kaw and Muscogee heritage. He pioneered jazz fusion in the late 1960s with The Free Spirits, an early jazz-rock group that included Larry Coryell, blending jazz and rock elements. In 1969, Everything Is Everything released their self-titled album featuring Pepper as lead vocalist on "Witchi Tai To," which reached number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Throughout his career, Pepper collaborated with notable artists such as Don Cherry and Paul Motian, recording albums including Comin' and Goin' (1984). He died on February 10, 1992, from lymphoma. Posthumously, he received the Lifetime Musical Achievement Award from First Americans in the Arts in 1999 and was inducted into the Native American Music Awards Hall of Fame in 2000.
