Biography

Jean Pierre Magnet Vargas-Prada (born September 11, 1949, in Lima, Peru) was a Peruvian saxophonist, composer, and producer. Magnet began a musical career at the Country Club Lima Hotel before joining the rock group Traffic Sound in 1967. The band released the album Virgin (1969), featuring the song “Meshkalina”, and completed tours of Argentina and Brazil. Following the group's 1972 disbandment, Magnet studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Buenos Aires and the University of Southern Mississippi. In 1984, Magnet co-founded the quartet PeruJazz, which combined jazz with Afro-Peruvian and Andean rhythms. The ensemble performed at the New Music America and Cervantino festivals. Magnet's later career included the ensembles Wayruro, La Gran Banda, and the Serenata de los Andes project, which released the album Serenata Inkaterra (2006). Magnet was named a “Marca Perú” ambassador in 2011.
