Biography

Abranis, a rock and Kabyle music group from Algeria, was formed in 1967 by Karim Abranis, born Sid Mohand Tahar, and included Samir Chabane on drums, Madi Mahdi on guitar, and Shamy el Baz on organ. In 1973, the group solidified its lineup and began performing. Their first significant release was Abranis 1977, an album that featured a blend of rock and chaabi music and included notable tracks such as "Cnaɣ lblues" and "Yemma". In 1978, they released Imité Tayri, which showcased a mix of jazz and traditional Algerian sounds. Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, Abranis continued to release albums and perform extensively in Algeria and Europe. The group disbanded in 1983 but reunited in 2007, releasing new albums Rwayeh (2011) and Asmekti (2016).
