Jan Augustoff, known professionally as Jan August, was born on September 24, 1904, in New York City and was an American pianist and xylophonist. He began his career at age 17 in Greenwich Village and was self-taught. In 1946, he was discovered by a Diamond Records executive who wrote the recording contract on a nightclub tablecloth. August's breakthrough came with "Misirlou" in 1947, which became a hit. He played this song at the Press Photographers' Ball in Washington, D.C., where President Harry Truman responded with "Missouri Waltz". Throughout his career, he released numerous albums, including Piano Rhythm (1949), More Favorites (1950), and Shimmering Waltzes (1951). August died in New York City on January 9, 1976, from heart disease.
