Jamey Aebersold, born Wilton Jameson Aebersold on July 21, 1939 in New Albany, Indiana, is an American publisher, educator, and jazz saxophonist. At fifteen, Aebersold began playing with local bands and later attended Indiana University in Bloomington. In the late 1960s, Aebersold started teaching at Indiana University Southeast. A career milestone came with the release of the first volume of the Play-A-Long series in 1967, which became an internationally recognized resource for jazz education. This series featured instructional books and CDs using the chord-scale system. Releases include the record You Can Play ... Sonny Rollins (1976). Aebersold received several honors, including an honorary doctorate from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 1992 and the NEA Jazz Masters award in 2014.
