Biography

Born on July 30, 1937 in Indianapolis, Indiana, James Spaulding is a jazz alto saxophonist and flutist. He studied at the Chicago Cosmopolitan School of Music before joining Sun Ra’s band in 1957. After leaving Sun Ra in 1961, he worked as a studio musician for Blue Note Records. His best-known recordings during this period revolve around his work with Freddie Hubbard’s quintet. He also recorded with the World Saxophone Quartet, Art Blakey, Grant Green, Bobby Hutcherson, Hank Mobley, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Stanley Turrentine, and Larry Young among many others. In the 1970s, he played sessions with Louis Armstrong, Kenny Barron, Woody Shaw, and more. Spaulding’s first album as a leader was 1976’s Plays the Legacy of Duke Ellington (1976), Gotstabe a Better Way (1988), Brilliant Corners (1988), The Smile of the Snake (1997), Blues Up & Over (2001), and Down With It (2006). Since the 1980s, he’s also played with Ricky Ford, David Murray, William Parker, and others.
