Biography
Wilfred Gerald "Jackie" Edwards, born in 1938 in Jamaica, was a musician, songwriter, and record producer known for his contributions to ska, R&B, soul, reggae, ballads, and rocksteady. Influenced by Nat King Cole, he began performing at age 14 and gained attention from Chris Blackwell in 1959. Edwards had four Number 1 singles in Jamaica between 1960 and 1961. When Blackwell set up Island Records in London in 1962, Edwards traveled with him and worked as a singer and songwriter for the label, recording The Most of Jackie Edwards (1963) and duets with Millie Small. He wrote "Keep On Running" (1966) and "Somebody Help Me" (1966), which became Number 1 singles in the United Kingdom for the Spencer Davis Group. Subsequent albums include I Do Love You (1972) and Tell It Like It Is (1982). Edwards died from a heart attack on August 15, 1992.
