Biography
John Wesley Vivian Payne, born on August 22, 1899 in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England, was a British bandleader and singer. He started playing piano in amateur dance bands during his service in the Royal Flying Corps. During the early 1920s, he performed with American jazz bands at the Birmingham Palais. In 1925, Payne moved to London, where his ten-piece band became the house band at Hotel Cecil, regularly performing on the BBC. In 1928, he was appointed as the BBC Director of Dance Music, leading the first official dance band for the broadcaster. His signature tune was "Say it With Music", written by Irving Berlin. After leaving the BBC in 1932, he returned to playing hotel venues. Payne composed and published three successful waltzes: Blue Pacific Moonlight, Underneath the Spanish Stars and Pagan Serenade. He died on December 4, 1969 in Tonbridge, Kent.
