Biography

Irene Reid, born September 23, 1930, in Savannah, Georgia, was an American jazz singer. She began her career singing in church and at high school before moving to New York City in 1947 following her mother's death. Later that year, she won an amateur contest at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. From 1948 to 1950, Reid was the lead vocalist with Dick Vance at the Savoy Ballroom. From 1961 to 1962, she sang with Count Basie's orchestra and recorded for Verve Records, releasing albums such as It’s Only the Beginning (1963) and Room for One More (1965). Reid also performed in Broadway productions, including The Wiz, and collaborated with notable artists like Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan, Aretha Franklin, and B.B. King. In 2002, her voice was sampled by the DJ duo Beginerz for their hit "Reckless Girl". Irene Reid passed away on January 5, 2008.
