Japanese jazz quartet Indigo Jam Unit was formed in Osaka, Japan in 2005. The band is comprised of members Yoshichika Tarue (piano), Katsuhiko Sasai (double bass), Isao Wasano (percussion), and Takehiro Shimizu (drums). Originally a trio of Tarue, Sasai, and Wasano, their producer Kenichi Tateiwa suggested that they add Shimizu to the bandâs line-up and they officially became a quartet in 2005. They released their debut album DEMONSTRATION in 2006. While they were initially compared to other Japanese jazz outfits, the bandâs unique twin drum approach made them stand out from the other bands. They released their second album, 2x2 later in 2006. They followed that up with REALism in 2008. Other albums in their catalog include Roots (2010), REBEL (2012), Milestone (2013), indigo Jam Unit (2014), and Lights (2015). Theyâve also collaborated with other Japanese artists including jazz vocalist Karen Aoki, Trinidadian vocalist Alicia Saldenha, and jazz outfit Flexlife.
