Biography

Imrat Khan, born on November 17, 1935, in Calcutta, India, was a sitar and surbahar player and composer from a family of musicians. He began his musical training under his uncle Wahid Khan after moving to Bombay with his older brother Vilayat Khan in 1944. In 1961, he started performing solo. Notable performances include the first-ever all-night performance of Indian classical music at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1971. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1988. He released albums such as Rāg Mīyā Kī Todī & Rāg Bilāskhānī Todī (1989), Raga Marwa (1992), and Legendary Legacy (2006). He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2017, though he declined it. Imrat Khan died on November 22, 2018, in St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of 83.
