Biography

Jim Varsos, known professionally as Hobo Jim, was born on December 21, 1952 in Lafayette, Indiana and raised in Madison, Wisconsin. He began playing guitar at age 12 and moved to Alaska in 1972, settling in Soldotna. His music career centered on frequent performances at small venues across the state. In 1994, he was named Alaska’s official balladeer. He co-wrote the song “The Rock” with Russell Smith, which was recorded by Etta James and George Jones. His discography includes the albums Thunderfoot (1982), Lost and Dyin’ Breed (1985), Where Legends Are Born (1986), Woodsmoke (2004), and My Wild and Wolfen Ways (2015). In 2018, he received an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He died on October 5, 2021, in Nashville, Tennessee.
