Biography

Helmut Krebs, born on October 8, 1913 in Dortmund, Germany, was a tenor known for his opera and concert performances. He trained at the Conservatory of Dortmund and the Berlin University of Music, making his stage debut in 1938 at the Volksoper Berlin. World War II interrupted his career, but he resumed performing post-war in Düsseldorf and joined the Berlin State Opera in 1947. Krebs specialized in lyrical roles from German and Italian repertoires and explored early music, notably in L'Orfeo by Monteverdi. He performed at prestigious venues including the Royal Opera House and La Scala. Notable recordings include Iphigenie in Aulis by Gluck (1951) and L'Orfeo by Monteverdi (1955). Krebs taught at the Berlin University of Music starting in 1957 and was named Kammersänger in 1963. He passed away on August 30, 2007, in Berlin.
