Biography

Konrad Junghänel is a German lutenist and conductor born on February 27, 1953, in Gütersloh. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by historically informed performance and for founding the vocal ensemble Cantus Cölln. Junghänel achieved professional recognition for a career that began after he started his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln at age 17. He achieved professional recognition for accompanying the countertenor René Jacobs at age 20 and collaborating with the musician Alfred Deller. He achieved professional recognition for performing international recitals as a soloist and chamber musician and collaborating with ensembles including Les Arts Florissants, La Petite Bande, and Musica Antiqua Köln. In 1987 he founded the ensemble Cantus Cölln with which he recorded over 30 CDs before dissolving the group in 2022. Junghänel achieved professional recognition for serving as a professor at the Hochschule für Musik Köln since 1994. He achieved professional recognition for conducting Mozart operas including Die Zauberflöte, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, and Figaros Hochzeit at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden during the 2016 to 2017 season. His discography included a final concert with Cantus Cölln (2022) featuring the motets of the musician Johann Sebastian Bach. He achieved professional recognition for receiving an Echo-Klassik award.
