Biography

Peter Anders, born July 1, 1908, in Essen, Germany, was a German opera singer known for his tenor voice. He began singing at age twelve and later received vocal training from Ernst Grenzebach and Lula Mysz-Gmeiner after training as an auditor or accountant in Berlin. Anders made his debut in 1932 in Heidelberg, followed by engagements at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich in 1938 and the Berliner Staatsoper in 1939. During World War II, he was listed as an important artist on Reichspropagandaminister Goebbels' "Gottbegnadeten-Liste." Post-war, Anders joined the Staatsoper Hamburg in 1948 and performed extensively across Europe, including notable roles such as Otello in Giuseppe Verdi's opera of the same name at the Hamburgische Staatsoper in 1950. His career was marked by significant recordings, including “Winterreise” by Franz Schubert. Anders had a car accident near Soltau and died five days later on September 10, 1954, at the Hafenkrankenhaus in Hamburg.
