Biography
Helmut Brandt (born January 7, 1931, in Berlin â July 26, 2001) was a German baritone and tenor saxophonist, composer, and arranger. A central figure of Cool Jazz in Germany, Brandt began playing violin and mandolin at age 10 and later studied at the Klindworth-Scharwenka-Konservatorium. During his studies, Brandt performed at the jazz club Die Badewanne. In 1955, he established the Helmut Brandt Combo, which received multiple awards. Brandt served as a member and arranger for the RIAS Tanzorchester from 1959 until 1997. In 1967, he performed with the Berlin Dream Band led by Don Ellis. His major compositions included the Konzert für Jazz Combo and the Symphonische Dichtung für Big Band und Symphonieorchester (1998). Brandt received the Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande in 2000. He died in Stuttgart in 2001.
