Biography

Hasaan Ibn Ali, born William Henry Langford Jr. on May 6, 1931 in Philadelphia, was an American jazz pianist and composer. He began his career touring with Joe Morris' rhythm and blues band at age 15 and played locally with notable figures by 1950. In 1964, he released The Max Roach Trio Featuring the Legendary Hasaan with Max Roach and bassist Art Davis. Despite this success, Ibn Ali's profile receded until posthumous releases in 2021: Metaphysics: The Lost Atlantic Album and Retrospect in Retirement of Delay: The Solo Recordings. These recordings highlighted his impact on jazz history. Hasaan Ibn Ali died in Philadelphia in 1980 at the age of 49.
