Hans Fryba, born Johann Frýba on April 24, 1899 in Reisenberg, Austria, was a double bass player and composer. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Music and Performing Arts, with Eduard Madenski as his intrumental teacher. In 1922, Hans Fryba joined the Vienna Philharmonic. He later became a bassist in the orchestra of the Mégaron MousikÃs in Athens and a professor at the Royal Conservatory. In 1929, he secured the position of principle double bassist with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva, where he remained for the next four decades. Hans Fryba retired in 1968, receiving an honorary professorship from the Republic of Austria and the Geneva Conservatory. He returned to his homeland in 1969 and spent his final years in Gramatneusiedl, where he was buried after his death on January, 1986.
