Hanggai is a folk rock band from Beijing, China, formed in 2004, that blends traditional Mongolian music with modern genres like punk rock. The band's name, "Hanggai," refers to an idealized Mongolian landscape of grasslands, mountains, and blue skies. Founded by Ilchi, who sought to reconnect with his ethnic roots through throat singing, Hanggai's members include both ethnic Mongolians and Han Chinese musicians specializing in Mongolian instruments. Their music features traditional instruments such as the morin khuur and topshur, combined with electric guitars, bass, and percussion. Sung in Mongolian and Mandarin, their songs often incorporate throat singing and traditional lyrics, reflecting themes of cultural preservation and identity. Influenced by Western artists like Pink Floyd and Radiohead, Hanggai's sound is a fusion of folk traditions and contemporary rock elements. The band has gained international recognition, performing at festivals like Wacken Open Air and the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, and has released several albums, including Introducing Hanggai (2008), He Who Travels Far (2010), and Homeland (2017).
