Biography

HALCALI was a pioneering Japanese female hip-hop duo formed by childhood friends HALCA and YUCALI. The pair rose to fame after winning a 2002 audition for female rappers and debuted in January 2003 with the single “Tandem.” Their name combines both members' names, and they were originally produced by RYO-Z and DJ FUMIYA of RIP SLYME’s O.T.F collective. HALCALI gained popularity for their catchy and quirky blend of hip-hop and pop, becoming media personalities through radio and TV appearances while also working as fashion models and magazine contributors. In 2008, they performed at MIDEM in Cannes. Songs featured in commercials often reignited public interest, such as the 2009 surge in popularity for their version of “Konya wa Boogie-Back” and the 2011 hit “Kyou no Watashi wa Kigen ga Ii.” After their final live appearance at Countdown Japan 12/13 in 2012, they ended contracts with their agency and label, shifting to solo careers. In spring 2025, their song “Otsukare Summer” from their debut album HALCALI Bacon (2003) went viral on the streaming platform and the online video platform, charting across Asia and reviving global interest in their music.
