Haircut 100, a British new wave/jazz-funk group, was formed in Beckenham, London, by Nick Heyward, Les Nemes, and Graham Jones. The band's origins date back to 1980 when Heyward and Nemes, who had previously played together in several bands since 1977, moved to London and recruited Jones. After a brainstorming session for band names, they settled on Haircut One Hundred. The group initially included drummer Patrick Hunt but later replaced him with Blair Cunningham. Managed by Karl Adams, the band recorded demos that led to the addition of Phil Smith on saxophone and Marc Fox on percussion. In 1981, they signed with Arista Records and released their debut single "Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)", which reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart. Their debut album Pelican West was released in February 1982, peaking at number 2 on the UK Albums Chart, spawning internationally acclaimed hits like "Love Plus One", "Fantastic Day", and "Nobody's Fool". In late 1982, tensions within the group led to Nick Heyward's departure. The remaining members continued under Polydor Records but struggled to replicate their earlier success. Their follow-up album Paint and Paint failed to chart, leading to the band's split in 1984. Haircut 100 reunited briefly for performances in 2004 and 2009-2013, and again in 2023 for a UK tour and US/Canada tour with ABC and Howard Jones, releasing the single "The Unloving Plum" in 2024.
