Biography

Gunnar Olof “Hacke” Björksten (February 27, 1934 – December 17, 2020) was a Finnish-Swedish jazz tenor saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. Born in Helsinki, he moved to Sweden in 1945. Björksten obtained his first professional engagement with bassist Thore Jederby before performing with Kenneth Fagerlund’s band. In 1954, he founded the Hacke Björksten Kvintett featuring Christer Fryklöf, Stig Larsson, and Bengt Carlsson. Björksten was a prominent figure on the Swedish jazz scene for six decades and received the 1956 Gyllene skivan award for the recording “On the Alamo”. His discography includes leading the Hacke Björksten Corporation on albums such as Happy (1973) and The Swinging Sides of Hacke Björksten (1979). He also collaborated with Mel Lewis and Ulf Johansson Werre on Jazz Delivery (1987) and released the album Top Three in 2014. Björksten died in Stockholm in 2020.
