Biography
Colombian pop singer Juan Fonseca was born in Bogotá on May 29, 1979, and after studying music in his native city continued his musical education in the United States attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston. After returning to Colombia, Fonseca began singing in a rock band called Baroja who built up a small following in the club scene around the capital city. After his brief foray into rock music, Fonseca adopted a more mainstream tropipop style for his debut self-titled solo album released in 2002. The new formula went down well with the Colombian public and as Fonseca's popularity grew the Latin record industry began to take notice resulting in a Grammy Award for the track "Te Mando Flores" lifted from the 2005 album Corazón. The LP also received a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Tropical Album. His third album Gratitud released in 2008 made the Top 10 on Billboard's US Tropical Albums Chart and demonstrated that Fonseca had made the important transition from being primarily a South American artist to a performer whose appeal extended to the lucrative North American market. His critical acclaimed 2011 release Ilusión topped the Colombian charts and was certified platinum in the process. This success was followed by other well-received releases such as Conexión (2015), Homenaje a la Música de Diomedes DÃaz (2015), AgustÃn (2018), and Viajante (2022), which featured guest spots by Greeicy, Cali & El Dandee, Silvestre Dangond, and Cimafunk. In 2024, Fonseca returned with Tropicalia, an 11-track album that combined different Latin music genres with his romantic pop approach, featuring contributions from Juan Luis Guerra, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Chucho Valdés, and Grupo Niche. Later that year, Tropicalia won the Latin Grammy for Best Tropical Contemporary Album, while âSi Tú Me Quieres,â his collaboration with Juan Luis Guerra, also won Best Tropical Song. Fonseca extended the project into 2025 with the Tropicalia Tour, bringing the albumâs mix of pop, vallenato, salsa, merengue, bolero, and tropical rhythms to dates across Latin America, the United States, and Spain. He also opened a new release cycle with âVENGA lo que VENGAâ with Rawayana and âNunca Me Fuiâ with Rubén Blades, both later nominated for Best Tropical Song at the 2025 Latin Grammys. In 2026, Fonseca released Antes Que El Tiempo Se Vaya, a 12-track album featuring Juanes, Manuel Medrano, Nanpa Básico, Rubén Blades, Rawayana, and RÃo Roma. Led by songs such as âAntes Que El Tiempo Se Vaya,â âCelebrar,â âEnamorarte Mil Veces,â and âNo Me Resisto,â the album kept his romantic songwriting at the center while expanding the tropical and Latin pop palette explored on Tropicalia.
