Biography

Grupo Compay Segundo is a Cuban musical group formed in 2003 following the death of its namesake, Compay Segundo. The group was founded by Salvador Repilado Labrada, son of Compay Segundo, who continued a musical legacy. Compay Segundo left the group Los Compadres in 1953 and later formed Compay Segundo y Sus Muchachos in 1956. After a hiatus due to the Cuban Revolution, Compay Segundo returned to music in the 1970s with Cuarteto Daiquiri (1970) and joined Cuarteto Patria. In 1992, Compay Segundo reformed the quartet as Compay Segundo y Su Grupo (1992), which gained international recognition through collaborations like the Buena Vista Social Club project in 1998. Their lineup continued to perform and record under Salvador Repilado's leadership after Compay Segundo's death in 2003, releasing notable albums such as Cien Años Compay (2004), Siempre Compay (2005), and Vivelo (2022).
