Biography

Griot Galaxy was an avant-garde jazz group from Detroit, United States of America. The band was founded in 1972 by saxophonist and poet Faruq Z. Bey, along with drummer Tariq Samad, bassist Jaribu Shahid, and saxophonists Anthony Holland and David McMurray. Their first recorded appearance was on Phil Ranelin's 1976 album Vibes from the Tribe, featuring "He the One We All Know". The group's debut recording as Griot Galaxy was the 1982 album, Kins, released on Black & White Records. In 1984, two tracks appeared on The Montreux/Detroit Collection - Volume Three: Motor City Modernists, recorded at Detroit's Montreux Jazz Festival. The group disbanded in 1989 following a serious motorcycle accident involving Faruq Z. Bey five years prior.
