Biography

With four Grammy Award nominations and sales of over 20 million albums, Godsmack is one of America's most successful post-grunge acts. The band was formed in 1995 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, by frontman Sully Erna, bassist Robbie Merrill, guitarist Lee Richards, and drummer Tommy Stewart. This founding lineup had changed by the time the self-titled debut album Godsmack was released in 1998, with Erna and Merrill soon becoming the only co-founders to remain within the group's roster. Godsmack went four-times platinum in America, its popularity boosted by singles like "Keep Away" and the platinum-certified "Voodoo." 2000's Awake and 2003's Faceless enjoyed platinum sales, too, with Faceless becoming the band's first record to reach Number 1 on the Billboard 200. Godsmack returned to Number 1 with 2006's IV and 2010's The Oracle, and the group remained active well into the 2020s, even reaching Number 19 on the Billboard 200 with the album Lightning Up the Sky in 2023. Lighting Up the Sky featured the single "Surrender," which became the band's twelfth song to reach Number 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.
