Biography

GNR is a Portuguese pop rock ensemble from Vila Nova de Gaia established in 1980. They achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by pop rock and post-punk and for creating a new sound during the Portuguese rock boom. The ensemble was founded by the guitarist and vocalist Alexandre Soares, the guitarist Vítor Rua, and the drummer Tóli César Machado. Their recording career began with a debut performance in 1981 and the single "Portugal na CEE" (1981) which sold over 15,000 copies. GNR achieved professional recognition for the addition of the vocalist Rui Reininho in September 1981, which led to a change in the lyrical direction of the group featuring humor and sarcasm. Their discography included the debut studio recording Independança (1982) and the studio recording Defeitos especiais (1984). The latter recording featured the multi-lingual single "I Don´t Feel Funky (Anymore)". The ensemble achieved professional recognition for the studio recording Os homens não se querem bonitos (1985) featuring the hit song "Dunas". Their recording career included the studio recording Psicopátria (1986) and the studio recording Valsa dos detectives (1989). The ensemble achieved professional recognition for receiving the Medal of Cultural Merit in 2005.
