Biography

American vocalist Lugenia Thompson (born on November 10, 1976), aka Gina Thompson, had her first brush with fame during the mid-90s thanks to her soulful blend of urban pop music, hip-hop, and contemporary R&B. Hailing from Vineland, New Jersey, Thompson began singing in her childhood and landed her first record deal with Mercury Records fresh out of high school in 1995. Featuring production by Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott and Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs, her studio debut Nobody Does It Better arrived in 1996. The album hit Number 36 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart propelled by lead single “The Things That You Do,” which peaked at Number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following a platinum certification of her debut LP in 1998 and a guest spot on Elliott’s sophomore effort Da Real World, second album If You Only Knew dropped in 1999 but it was quickly shelved due to the poor commercial performance of its lead single “Ya Di Ya.” After being released from her contract, Thompson took an extended hiatus from the music industry and returned in 2009 with the full-length Missing You, whose lack of charting singles resulted in her exit from label Blue Mountain Records/Sunset Urban Records.
