Gerhard Weilheim, known professionally as Gerry Weil, was born on August 11, 1939, in Vienna and moved to Venezuela in 1957. He was a jazz musician, pianist, composer, arranger, and music educator. He began his musical journey at around six years old, captivated by jazz brought by American occupation troops after World War II. At 17, he started his professional career, forming La Banda de Gerry Weil in 1970, which released the album The Message. In 1972, he established the Banda Municipal, blending traditional Venezuelan music with contemporary rhythms. He returned to Caracas in 1981, teaching music and performing internationally. Weil received the National Music Prize of Venezuela in 2008 and the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in 2009. His notable works include "Caballito Frenao" and albums such as EmpatÃa (2006) and Sabana Grande (2020). Weil passed away on November 16, 2024, in Caracas.
