Gerardo MejÃa, known mononymously as Gerardo, and born on April 16, 1965, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, is a rapper, singer, and actor. He moved to Glendale, California at age 12. His breakthrough came with "Rico Suave" from his debut album Mo' Ritmo (1991), which reached number 7 on the Billboard charts and popularized Spanglish in Latin hip-hop. Gerardo MejÃa's subsequent singles included "We Want the Funk" (1991) and "Latin Till I Die (Oye Como Va)" (1991). In 2004, he released 180°, marking a shift as he became a pastor.
