George Mitchell, known as âLittle Mitchâ, was an American jazz cornet player born on March 8, 1899, in Louisville, Kentucky. He began playing the instrument at age 12 and performed with a brass band in his hometown. Between 1921 and 1923, Mitchell recorded with Johnny Dunn's Original Jazz Hounds and Johnny Dunn's Original Jazz Band for the Columbia label. In 1926, he recorded with the New Orleans Wanderers and New Orleans Bootblacks, performing in place of Louis Armstrong. Mitchell collaborated with Jelly Roll Mortonâs Red Hot Peppers, Luis Russell, and Johnny Dodds. He also performed with the Earl Hines Orchestra. Mitchell stopped his musical career around 1931 and worked as a bank messenger. He died on May 22, 1972, in Chicago, Illinois.
