Frederick John Elgersma, known professionally as Fred Eaglesmith, was born on July 9, 1957, in Caistor Centre, Ontario, Canada. Raised by a farming family near Guelph in rural Southern Ontario, he began playing the guitar at age 12 and started his music career as a teenager by hopping a freight train to Western Canada to write songs and perform. Eaglesmith founded several bands, including The Smokin' Losers, The Flying Squirrels, and The Flathead Noodlers, each representing different musical styles. His first self-titled album was released in 1980. Throughout his career, Eaglesmith has released numerous albums, including Things Is Changin' (1993) and "Lipstick Lies & Gasoline" (1997). He is known for his extensive touring, often performing with a backing band that evolved over the years. Notable collaborations include work with Willie P. Bennett and Tif Ginn, whom he married in 2014.
