Biography
Anner Bylsma was a master cellist from the Netherlands. His father was also a musician and he studied at the Royal Conservatory, the Hague, where he discovered the Baroque cello.
He was principal cellist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1962 to 1968. He then devoted himself to solo performances of chamber music, playing with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Tafelmusik and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He also played with the Smithsonian Chamber Players.
Bylsma was noted for his authentic playing and preferred to use gut strings to steel strings. He is best known for his recording of Bach's six cello suites. He was also a scholar and teacher and wrote a book on Bach's cello suites, 'Bach, The Fencing Master', published in 1998. He died in 2019 at the age of 85.
