Biography

Monaco is a musical project formed in Manchester in 1995 by Peter Hook, iconic bassist with Joy Division and New Order, and composer and multi-instrumentalist David Potts. The band blends influences from British rock, Britpop and dance, creating a sound that is both melodic and rhythmic. Their debut album, Music for Pleasure, released on June 9, 1997, was a critical and commercial success, with the single "What Do You Want from Me?" reaching #11 in the UK charts, followed by "Sweet Lips" (#18) and "Shine (Someone Who Needs Me)" (#55). Monaco features powerful bass lines, polished production and a dark yet energetic atmosphere. After a break, the band returned in August 2000 with a second album, Monaco, continuing their exploration of danceable electronic rock. Despite the more modest success of this second opus, the band left a notable mark on the British scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s, embodying the transition from Britpop to electronic sounds.
