Biography

The Flavor Unit is a hip-hop collective from New Jersey and New York, formed in the late 1980s around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Initially focused on artistic collaborations, the group became known for its proximity to Queen Latifah, one of its first and most important members. The collective began as a group of artists revolving around Mark the 45 King, who produced several influential underground hip-hop tracks in the late 1980s. After Queen Latifah took on a more central role, The Flavor Unit also evolved into a management and production company, known as Flavor Unit Management, co-founded by Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere. The collective included artists such as Apache, Lakim Shabazz, Lord Alibaski, Chill Rob G, Naughty by Nature (formerly The New Style), Freddie Foxxx, and Black Sheep (in some expanded configurations). In 1993, a compilation album entitled Flavor Unit MCs was released by Epic Records, featuring several members of the collective, including Queen Latifah, Naughty by Nature, Freddie Foxxx and Chip-Fu. The Flavor Unit is credited with promoting hip-hop that is conscious, energetic and representative of the effervescent East Coast rap scene of the early 1990s.
