Biography

Fausto Amodei was an Italian folk singer-songwriter and musicologist who was born in Turin in 1934. He achieved early professional recognition in 1958 after founding the ensemble Cantacronache, which helped pioneer the modern Italian song of social protest. Amodei is famous for his satirical musical style, influenced by Georges Brassens, and for his anthem “Per i morti di Reggio Emilia” (1960), dedicated to victims of police violence. In 1968, he was elected to the Italian Parliament as a deputy for the Italian Socialist Party of Proletarian Unity. His discography includes the studio recordings Cantacronache 3 (1971), Se non li conoscete (1972), and L'ultima crociata (1974). Amodei received the Premio Tenco in 1975 and published the album Per fortuna c'è il cavaliere (2005) after a lengthy hiatus. He died in 2025.
