Biography
Johnny Corley, born Aprilâ¯28,â¯1943 in Greenwood, Southâ¯Carolina, is an American soul singer. After leaving Brewer High School for military service, Corley returned to Norristown, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a heavyâequipment operator and joined a gospel group at Macedonia Baptist Church; his vocal talent was noticed by producer Jesse James, who persuaded him to pursue secular music. Corleyâs breakthrough came with the 1967 single "Boogaloo Down Broadway", released on PhilâL.A. of Soul under the stage name the Fantastic Johnnyâ¯C; the track peaked at numberâ¯5 on the Billboard R&B chart and numberâ¯7 on the Hotâ¯100 on Decemberâ¯23,â¯1967. In 1968, he released three additional charting singles-"Got What You Need", which entered the R&B chart at numberâ¯32 and the pop chart at numberâ¯56), "Hitch It to the Horse" at numberâ¯25 and numberâ¯34, and "(She's) Some Kind of Wonderful" on the pop chart at number 87. He issued the album Boogaloo Down Broadway the same year. Corley remained with PhilâL.A. of Soul until 1970 before signing with Kamaâ¯Sutra Records, where he released two more singles under the name Johnnyâ¯C that failed to chart. After departing the music industry he opened J.C. Records in Norristown and performed occasionally in later years.
