Fatoumata dite Fantani Touré was born in Bamako, Mali, in May 1964. Born into a line of griots, she devoted her life to the arts, dancing, singing and acting from the age of seven. Revealed by a dazzling performance with Toumani Diabaté on kora at a local festival in 1995, her first album N'tin Naari (1997) was produced by Salif Keita. This exceptional artist doubles up as an activist for women's rights in her country, where she is politically recognized and dubbed "The voice of women in distress". Her international career certainly suffered from this commitment, which kept her busy in Mali, as her subsequent albums were not distributed outside Africa. Knight of the National Order of Mali and winner of the Unesco Prize for Peace Education in 2011, Fantani Touré died on December 3, 2014 in Paris.
