Biography

Estakazero are a six-piece forró band formed in Salvador, Brazil in 2001 by lead singer and instrumentalist Léo Macedo. Forró is a traditional style which can trace its origins back over two centuries and was originally a feature of the many plantations found in north eastern Brazil where the farmers and workers would often sing as they performed their tasks. The musical tradition had shown signs of dying out until a resurgence of interest in the late 1990s, particularly amongst university students and young people, brought about a revival. It was on the back of this renaissance that Macedo formed his band and they were soon a regular feature of university parties and celebrations. In the band's second year they played 42 concerts during one month. Estakazero's popularity came to the attention of music giant EMI who signed the band in 2006. The group have since gone on to record ten albums and created a niche for themselves in modern Brazilian music culture.
