Biography

John Kaizan Neptune, born November 13, 1951, in Oakland, California, is an American musician and builder known for his mastery of the shakuhachi. He began studying ethnomusicology at the University of Hawaii in 1971 and continued his studies in Kyoto, Japan. In March 1977, he received the "shi-han," or master's certificate, in the Tozan School of Shakuhachi. Neptune's debut album, Bamboo Textures, was released in 1979. His album, Bamboo, was named Outstanding Album of the Year for 1980 by the Cultural Affairs Agency of the Japanese Ministry of Education. He has performed extensively across North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, releasing over 20 albums with various musicians.
