Biography

Emma Townshend, born 28 March 1969 in the United Kingdom, is a British singer and writer who emerged from a musically inclined family. Her early exposure to performance began in 1982 when she and her sister Minta provided backup vocals on the A Bao A Qu EP by Virginia Astley, followed by backing work on Pete Townshend’s White City: A Novel in 1985 and appearances at two London concerts of the Deep End supergroup that same year. In 1995 she signed with EastWest Records, part of Warner Music Group, and released the album Winterland in 1998, which received favorable reviews. That year she also issued the maxi single Five‑A‑Side‑Football Remixes and the promotional single The Last Time I Saw Sadie. Her most widely recognised track, "We Can Fly Away", written by Sandy McLelland and Paul Lowin, served as the theme for the 1999 television film The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns. Throughout her career Townshend collaborated with various artists and contributed to soundtracks, while maintaining a parallel writing career that included publications on environmental and cultural topics. Her discography, though limited, reflects a focused period of activity between 1995 and 1998, after which she shifted her professional focus to journalism and academia.
