Biography

Edward E. Bello Pou, popularly recognized as El Cata, is a Dominican urban artist renowned for pioneering the electro-mambow genre—an infectious blend of merengue and hip-hop. Born on September 15, 1977, in Barahona, Dominican Republic, he moved from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico at age 5, and then to Miami, Florida. After relocating to New York, he studied music at the Bronx Community College in New York while also juggling a series of odd jobs to make ends meet. Returning to the Dominican Republic after two decades in the United States, El Cata made his official debut in 1997 with the singles "El Nacu Nacu" and "Con la Lengua Afuera." However, it wasn't until 2009 that he got his big break thanks to the album El Malo, which featured popular hits such as "Loca con Su Tiguere" and "El Que Brilla Brilla." That year, he also cemented his reputation as a bona fide hitmaker by co-writing Pitbull's number 1 single "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)," kicking off a series of high-profile collaborations with international stars such as Shakira, Drake, Gloria Estefan, and Lil Jon. His creative partnership with Pitbull would continue over the years on tracks like "Watagatapitusberry" (2010) and "Cotorra y Voli" (2014). Released in 2022, the album Inicios gathered some of his biggest hits, as well as a handful of live performances.
