Biography

Peter Wilson, known professionally as Duke Special, was born on 4 January 1971 in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. He began playing piano at a young age, influenced by family musicians, and later moved to Belfast where he developed a distinctive piano‑based songwriting style. In 2002 he adopted the stage name Duke Special and released the EP Lucky Me on Medieval Haircut Records, followed by My Villain Heart in 2004; the two were compiled into the album Adventures in Gramophone (2005), which earned a nomination for the Choice Music Prize. After signing with V2 Records, he issued Songs from the Deep Forest (2006), which also received a Choice Music Prize nomination and propelled him onto the BBC's Later… with Jools Holland program. In 2008 he released I Never Thought This Day Would Come under Universal, and in 2011 he presented a documentary on Ruby Murray and released Duke Special Sings the Songs of Ruby Murray. His subsequent albums Under the Dark Cloth (2011), Oh Pioneer (2012), Look Out Machines! (2015), and Hallow (2017) expanded his repertoire, with Oh Pioneer reaching Number 3 on the Irish Singer/Songwriter chart. Duke Special has toured extensively, performed with the Ulster Orchestra, and collaborated with artists such as Clannad; his work remains influential in contemporary rock and theatrical music circles.
