Biography

Born on January 17, 1959, in Genoa, Italy, Fabio Luisi is an acclaimed conductor who has worked with many of the world’s greatest classical ensembles including the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Originally, he began studying the piano under Aldo Ciccolini before turning his interest to conducting. He then studied at the conservatory in Graz, Austria and worked as accompanist and conductor for the Graz Opera. Fabio Luisi made his conducting debut in 1984 in Italy. He then became principal conductor of the Graz Symphony Orchestra between 1990 to 1995 before serving as Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Tonkünstler Orchestra (Vienna, Austria) from 1995 to 2000. He served as the principal conductor for the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester (aka MDR Symphony Orchestra) in Leipzig, Germany between 1999 and 2007. Fabio Luisi also served as conductor for the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (Switzerland) from 1997 to 2002, with whom he made the first complete recording of Verdi’s opera Jerusalem in 2000. Moving on, he became chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden (Germany) in 2004 and also assumed the same position at the Semperoper – also in Dresden – in 2007. At the same time, he was also conducting the Vienna Symphony. He stepped down from his positions at Staatskapelle Dresden and Semperoper in 2010 because of a dispute with the company. Continuing his musical journey, Fabio Luisi became the general music director of the Vienna Symphony (2005-2013), director of the Philharmonia Zurich (2012-2021), the Danish National Symphony (2017-2026), the music director of the Opera di Firenze, and director of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (2018-2019). He’s also held conducting positions for the Metropolitan Orchestra (New York), the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (Texas), the NHK Symphony Orchestra (Japan), and the RAI National Symphony Orchestra (Turin, Italy). With a remarkable career as conductor, Fabio Luisi’s recorded output contains many releases including Salieri: La Locandiera (1990), Bellini: Beatrice di Tenda (1993), Verdi: Aroldo (2001), Bellini: I Puritani (2006), Strauss: Eine Alpensinfonie, Op. 64 - Vier Letzte Lieder (2007), Mahler: Symphony No. 1 (2012), Rota: Musiques de Films (2016), Verdi: Overtures and Preludes (2017), and Nielsen: The Symphonies (2023).
