Biography

A Canadian singer-songwriter with Cree and Metis heritage, the country and folk stylings of singer/songwriter Don Amero brought him awards, while making sure people are made aware of often under-represented cultures. He put out his debut album, Change Your Life, in 2006, one year before finally abandoning his day job. It would be recognized by the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, picking up multiple nominations. This accomplishment was matched by his 2009 follow-up Deepening. His 2010 LP the Long Way Home captured the prize for Best Folk Recording at the 2011 Native American Music Awards. After 2012’s Heart on My Sleeve, Amero was named Male Entertainer of the Year by the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, and that record also garnered him his first Juno Award nomination. His sound shifted more toward country and 2015’s Refined picked up Juno nominations for Adult Contemporary Album of the year as well as Aboriginal Album of the year. After 2018/s Evolution, he signed with MDM Recordings and his first album with them, 2020’s The Next Chapter, contained his two biggest hits to that point on the Canadian country charts, “Music Lover” and “Wasn’t the Dress”. Throughout his career in interviews, on songs like “Rebuild This Town”, and in his many performances at charity concerts, Amero made sure listeners became aware of issues in the lives of Native Canadians.
